WHAT TO EXPECT IN THERAPY
The first step
I advise all prospective clients to contact me for a free informal chat before booking an appointment. This is a good opportunity for you to tell me a little about yourself, ask questions and to check whether I am the right type of therapist for you. If the therapy I provide is not the right fit for your needs I will suggest someone more suitable from my contacts. Once we have agreed to work together, we will discuss the practicalities of setting up therapy and arrange your first session.
First Session
In your first session we will gently explore and assess your difficulties in more depth to gather a shared understanding of what is currently contributing to, and maintaining your problem. We will discuss how many sessions you might need. I might ask you to fill in some questionnaires that we will use as a measure to help track progress and I will provide you with some information to read.
Therapy
We will meet regularly, usually once a week. At the beginning of therapy the emphasis will be on understanding what you are currently struggling with and the effects of this on your life. I will also ask you a little about your early life as it can help us make sense of what is happening in the present. When we've got a clear understanding of your difficulties we will identify specific goals for treatment that will keep us focussed in our sessions and work together as a team to make the changes you need in order to work towards your goals. I will use my clinical skills and draw upon different therapeutic approaches to help you consider different perspectives on your problem. My aim is to help you build emotional resilience, internal resources and learn new skills in order to maintain the positive changes you desire.
